“Where is He that is born King of the Jews, for we have seen His star in the east and are come to worship Him.” – Matthew 2:2
Worship is the only reasonable response to Gift of Jesus. The Wise Men brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, but before they gave those treasures, they first knelt before Him and gave Him their own lives.
Jesus arrived at a time when people were sitting in “darkness and the shadow of death.” What could be more welcome than the Gift of Life? To the leper, being healed and restored to family and community, Jesus was the Gift of life. To the woman caught in adultery and saved from stoning, Jesus was the Gift of life. To the grieving parents of a dead, twelve-year-old daughter, Jesus was the Gift of life. But physical healings only proved He had a far greater gift to bestow… the gift of Eternal Life through forgiveness of sins.
We too are sitting in darkness and the shadow of death. Statistic groups list heart attacks as the number one cause of death worldwide, taking over 21 million lives per year. Cancer is the second leading cause at over 10 million per year. Another 38 million die annually from aging, sickness, accidents, and violence, and then add the global abortion estimate of over 73 million.
The Bible is right. Death has passed upon all mankind because all have sinned. Yet through forgiveness, Jesus defeated death’s rightful claim on our lives. All who receive Him have the Gift of Everlasting Life – both quality and quantity.
What can we bring to worship Him? Thankful hearts, owning Him as Lord, in joyful faith that endures the trials of life. In His eyes, this is: “much more precious than gold which perishes.”
