Words At The Well (John 4)

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Jesus specifically journeyed into Samaria, at the precise time of day, in order to meet a woman drawing water alone. This was a Divine appointment, a premeditated meeting, to lead her to the One in whom is a ‘Water’ that forever quenches the God given thirsts that can’t be satisfied with earthly wells. He asks her, “Can you give Me a drink?” knowing that her response would be, “How is it that You, a Jew, are asking me, a Samaritan, for water? They have no dealings with each other.” But Jesus’ response was tender and intriguing… “If you only knew the gift God has for you, and Who you are speaking to, you would ask Me, and I would give you Living Water.” Starting to realize that this conversation was deeper than literal water, she says, “You have nothing to draw water with and this well is deep. Where would You get this Living Water? Please, Sir, get me this water that I may never thirst again.” Her parched soul, desperate for the Water of Life that truly satisfies, heard from the Messiah’s own mouth, the Words of Life… “Whoever drinks of the water I give him will never thirst again. The water I give him will become a spring of water bubbling up into eternal life.” Thinking Jesus was a prophet, as He told her of her many husbands, she declared, “I know that Messiah (called the Christ) is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us. Then Jesus declared, “I, the One speaking to you, I AM He.” How precious that Jesus made his identity known to a struggling, lost woman… all alone. He does that for us, too. Are you thirsting for the purpose of life? Are you tired of evaporating earthly waters that don’t satisfy the deepest needs of your heart? Are you distressed at the constant distresses here on earth and long for the peace only He can give? Jesus is THE answer. There is no other. Draw your water from Him. Let Him remind you that you are immortal, with eternal value and infinite purpose. Let His love fill your heart, and His unending wisdom feed your mind. As our world talks of a world that is dying, let the words of Christ dwell in you richly, that you are His bride, and He has gone to prepare a place for you where nothing that defiles can enter in. Drink it in, dear ones! Drink it in!

Isn’t it satisfying?
