Who Are You?

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

History reveals the search for mankind, irregardless of their location in the world, has constantly been to strive to be mini gods. They build their empires, they conquer other kingdoms, they create laws to fit their desires, they accumulate wealth while others starve, and they die off only for another to fill their place.

Knowing “who” we are and “whose” we are is imperative for us to live holy lives that honor God. We are not “all knowing (omniscient)” as Satan tried to convince Eve that she could be…  “Don’t you know you could be like God, knowing all things?”

Aren’t we so thankful we don’t know the future? We can look back on our lives and see all that God has brought us through and sigh in relief that we didn’t know the hardships that would befall us. God, in His mercy, leads us one step at a time.

Although the internet and FaceTime has brought people from opposite sides of the globe into each other’s living rooms, we are not omnipresent. We cannot be in more than one place at a time and we can thank God for that, too. We strive to manage all the responsibilities (and our attitudes) of just one job - loving God and our families well. We don’t need to feel guilt that we cannot be all things to everyone, everywhere; only God can do that.

King David loved to worship the Lord. Songs of praise flowed from his lips and his harp while watching the sheep on the hillsides. God saw his tender love and adoration for Him and exalted him to be King of Israel. He knew what it was to have great power and to walk with confidence in his palace, but most of all, He knew Whose he was - a child of God, a worshiper, and a servant of the Most High.

“Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper (lowest position as a servant) in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wicked.” (Psalm 84:10).

Oh, the importance of being a child of God, and knowing our greatest life’s attributes are not self-exaltation but God-exaltation. To know Him and serve Him is the greatest of life’s joys!
