“Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking The Truth and following (chasing after) their own desires (lusts), saying, Where is the promise of His coming? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has from the beginning of creation.” (2 Peter 3:3, 4)
Who was Peter writing this letter to? In 2 Peter 1:1, he states that he is writing “to them that have like precious faith with us.” He was writing to believers, and this warning that he gives about scoffers rising up, is not only about the nonbelievers mocking The Truth, but most likely from people within the church. Take note of the double problem presented… those that mock and scoff at the things of God, especially His promised return, will be simultaneously chasing after their own desires. Whether it is notoriety among the people, making a name for themselves and their new gospel, or placed there as wolves among sheep to create chaos. Watch! For the two go hand in hand.
It’s hard to imagine believers scoffing that Jesus will actually return, when He so faithfully, to the very detail, came the first time as a Babe, as prophesied. How can one watch the unraveling of society, morally and spiritually, and not see the global government of antichrist taking form? This is a blindness that has come as the result of making this world their home. Jesus warned, “Do not love this world, or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love for the Father is not in them.” (1 John 2:15)
Friends, we must surround ourselves with people that are also “watching for His appearing.” It’s that bond between fellow warriors that KNOW that their Commander is true to His word - every time, and is coming just as He said, to take them to safety. Let the scoffers scoff, and the mockers mock, we will do as the Word said to do, and “Comfort one another with these words.” Maranatha!
