In the days of ancient Assyria, God sent a prophet named Nahum with three wartime promises for then and now. The first is the assurance of coming justice by the Lord Himself… “God is jealous, and the Lord avenges. The Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord will bring vengeance (righteous retribution) on His adversaries, and He reserves His wrath for His enemies.” (Nahum 1:2).
No Believer need fear the wrath of God. Christ took all the wrath against our sins at the Cross … “Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath (the day of Judgment) through Him” (Romans 5:9). God reserves His wrath for His enemies – not His followers.
The second promise is… “The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked… The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him” (Nahum 1:3,7). When Christ returns, not one person who deserves wrath will escape. And not one person who loves the Lord will accidentally be judged with the wicked.
Lastly, “Behold upon the mountains the feet of Him who brings good tidings, who publishes peace!... the wicked shall no more pass through you: he is utterly cut off.” Just as the angels announced “Peace” when Christ was born, and the disciples published “Peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,” at His resurrection – a final proclamation of everlasting “Peace!” shall resound the world over at Christ’s return.
The book of Nahum holds a message of warning to antichrist nations and rulers, but comfort to those who are hated and persecuted for loving Christ. Jesus is returning to judge the world in righteousness. It may be sooner than we think! Maranatha!
