An architect was asked to create a large chapel with a dome-shaped sanctuary. As he set to work, some of the local helpers worried that the huge arches would need pillars of support beneath them. He assured them it wasn’t necessary; his foundation would uphold the great dome perfectly. They didn’t believe him.
After much quibbling, he built two large, beautiful columns. Long years after the architect’s death (and two earthquakes), men went up to dust and polish the ceiling. To their astonishment, they discovered the smug architect, Michelangelo, had left each pillar a few inches short of the ceiling. It had been for appearance only. His foundations had held perfectly, just as he claimed they would.
Jesus said He is preparing us for a “City that has foundations (of righteousness), whose Builder and Maker is God.” God has given His Word … “Behold, I lay in Zion a Foundation Stone, a tested Stone, a Precious Cornerstone, a sure Foundation: whoever believes in Him shall never be ashamed.” – (Isaiah 28:16).
Every life built on Christ and His Word has the assurance that we are “upheld” by His power. Neither time, nor the trials of life, will shake the life built on Him. An anonymous writer penned these beautiful words that we still sing today …
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word,
What more can He say, than to you He hath said,
To you, who for refuge, to Jesus have fled.
Fear not I am with you, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, I will still give thee aid,
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand!
The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.
