Unless The Lord

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for He gives His beloved sleep. Behold children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” (Psalm 127:1-3) The worst thing that could happen to us is to arrive in heaven only to realize that all we’ve toiled for wasn’t for God, but for us. We must be careful to choose to honor God with every single thing He has entrusted us with. Our home isn’t the result of careful financial planning and great design plans, but intended by God to be an Oasis of truth and love where each family member can find restoration. Our precious children are a gift from the Lord to raise for His glory. Unless the Lord is our focus, the world will rush in and steal away their time with everything that entertains, but nothing that lasts into eternity. We must make their spiritual life our greatest focus. If we don’t, the evil one will make them his highest priority. Our communities are not the government’s, but God’s. “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to Him” (Psalm 24:1-2). We need to realize that we have a voice for Good and should use it for the health of our cities. Unless the Lord is included in the protection of the city, and what its agenda is for its citizens, it will fall to prey. The watchmen watch in vain unless they are praying for protection from Above. We need the Lord. We cannot succeed on our own strength. “Children are a heritage from the Lord, a reward…” but only if you are raising them in godly homes, with godly teachings, to be honorable citizens that carry the standards and values of God into the public square. If we fail to include the Lord in all we do, we will leave our children to a world that is void of God, and full of evil. Believers have been silent for too long. We carry the message of Life and blessing, and we should unapologetically declare it with joy. May we honor Him and give him priority in every facet of our lives. Unless He builds the house, we labor in vain.
