Unless The Lord

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

We live in a day of building our own empires, our own image, our own brand. We build our own online “profile” to reflect only what we want the world to see and believe. We pride ourselves in the efforts of our own hands and minds as though we, ourselves, are responsible for this gifting. Fitness and health has become more than a way to honor and steward our bodies, but a god in itself, and self-worship has replaced the worship of God.

We’ve deceived ourselves into thinking that we can let evil within the boundaries of our minds, our hearts, and our lives, and not get burned. Living within the intoxicating air of self-delusionment, we became our own source of joy, as though it would be eternal. We have set ourselves up as our own definer of right and wrong, as though God doesn’t exist. We made ourselves our own reward, as though it would be fulfilling enough to satisfy, but it didn’t. It’s all a lie…

”Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain” (Psalm 127:1).

Society must never turn an accusing eye to those at the Tower of Babel, for we are no different… “Then they said, Come! Let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a (famous) name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth (as God instructed).” (Genesis 11:4).

The cry of these last days is a desperate and urgent one, just like the one the Lord commanded Zechariah to preach…

“Therefore, tell the people: this is what the Lord Almighty says - Return to Me, declares the Lord Almighty, and I will return to you, says the Lord of Heaven’s armies. Don’t be like those before you who refused to turn from their evil ways and godless practices. They would not listen to Me. Where are they now? They, and the prophets, are all dead. Did they think they would live forever?” (Zechariah 1:3-5)

Friends, there’s only one life that will soon be passed, and only what’s done for Christ will last. May we build our treasures in Heaven. Unless the Lord is in it, it’s all in vain.
