Two Houses Built

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Wisdom, (depicted as a woman) in Proverbs 9, built a house. She made sure it was built safely with seven pillars for support. She prepared food for her table, and set it, ready to invite guests to her home. Wisdom, invited the simple, and those that have no sense, to come learn of her ways, to leave their former way of life. She pleads for them to come and gain true understanding of life, and then she shares how…

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10). People that sit at Wisdom’s table are changed! Their lives are directed to the Source of all Wisdom and Life, their Heavenly Father. How blessed they’ve been to sit and learn from Wisdom!

Folly, also built a house. She is described as being loud, seductive, and knows nothing (vs 13). She calls out loudly for people to come to her home and eat of her stolen food in secret. Those that go into her lair do not realize that “her ways lead to death and that her guests are in the depths of hell” (vs 18).

Both voices are calling for our undivided attention, and the attention of our children. This world’s system is rooted in folly and lies, and their seductive invitations are alluring to many. May we rise up with the words of life and wisdom. Christ is the way, the truth, and the life! All other roads will lead to foolishness here, followed by hell.

Be careful which voice you follow and which house you build.
