Great times of darkness have descended on God’s people throughout history. From biblical times to the present, Christians have been persecuted, jailed and killed for their simple belief in God and His power to save. But it is in the darkest of times that God does not abandon us, but pours out His treasures…
On a cliff, overlooking the Red Sea, Moses lifted his hands to God on behalf of all the Children of Israel. Death looked certain… Pharaoh’s army was fast approaching, and the wind began to blow… stronger and stronger… until the waves had to obey Him and part. This dark moment was filled with the Great Treasure of deliverance. God came through…
Jesus had been beaten and whipped. An innocent, loving, Healer was now being tortured. Death would soon come as the cross that He carried would soon hold Him. The One who controlled the wind and the waves, now was subject to the evil acts of His own creation… and He allowed it. Could anything be darker than this? But as His last breath was used to utter the most powerful words - “It Is Finished!” darkness began to flee… the dividing curtain between God and man was ripped in two. The death sentence for our sin was paid in full. Eternal life was now possible to all who would believe. Darkness had been swallowed up with Light. Now, every good and eternal work was possible.
Friends, we are all watching darkness engulf our world. Evil politics and corrupt politicians seem to hold the reigns of control in our society, but their time is limited. Jesus has promised to come and to “remove us from the hour of testing that will come upon the whole world.” Just as Jesus’ tomb was black as night, seemingly hopeless to onlookers, as He lay there dead, a split-second Divine intervention changed everything, filling the tomb with glorious Light! The darkness of sin was dispelled! Jesus had risen to conquer sin and death. The greatest Deliverance of all time had occurred in the blackest of nights.
Friends, our Treasure in the darkness is that Jesus lives! And that He is interceding for us in our dark places of grief, despair, and weariness, and soon, He will burst into this bleakness and come. Our night will be turned to day, and forevermore, we will rejoice that He is the Light and Life that we have longingly waited for. What a Treasure it will be! Come Lord Jesus.
