This Will Be A Sign

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Everyone is looking for “a sign” of something to come; good or bad! Students of Bible prophecy are finding that more people are asking them about our state of world events - “Is this a sign? Is Jesus near? Is the end of the world coming soon?” The truth is that God has given many signs to us as gifts - markers that show us where we are on God’s calendar. Sadly, most are ignored as they glibly claim, “No man can know the time or the hour…” This response is denying the sign of Jesus.

“And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:12).  God had come to man! This was a sign of profound importance, as Isaiah prophesied that “Unto us a Child is born; unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and His peace, there shall be no end…” (Isaiah 9:6, 7a)

Among the world scholars of Jesus’ time, there was but a handful of wisemen that knew that “a sign” had been given in the stars. They travelled far, bearing gifts for the Christ child…  “And going into the house they saw The Child with Mary, His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. Then opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11).

Jesus grew and performed many signs - turning water into wine, healing the blind, the deaf, the leper, raising the dead, etc.… but He was met with one question…  “What sign can You show us that proves Your authority for doing all these things?” (John 2:18). Jesus calmly responded, “Destroy this temple (His body) and in three days I will raise it up” (vs 19). We all know the ending to this story… they asked for “A Sign” and He delivered “The Sign” of all signs - He rose from the dead. Did this draw everyone to believe in Him? No. And this is proof that not all want a sign… they would rather live in love of this world and deny the existence that Christ came, and He’s coming again.

Oh, if we could only open the eyes of the unbelieving to see that every “sign” they are longing for is found in Him - our Savior, our Redeemer, and Friend.

“Fall on your knees

Oh hear the angel’s voices,

Oh night, Divine!

Oh night, when Christ was born.”
