They Loved Darkness

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

This world is growing increasingly darker by the day. The Bible speaks of this problem in John chapter 3. “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of Light because their deeds were evil.” - (vs 19)

It’s hard to imagine “loving darkness,” but many do. There is a “pleasure of sin that is only for a season” that fills them with a sense of power and control. Others fear them, and to them, that’s even better than respect.

How do we pierce this darkness when it seems closed off to reason or conviction? The answer is simple, yet hard. We present them with the Light, the Truth of Jesus Christ, and what they do with it is between them and God. We are called to be sowers of Seed, not reapers.

A street preacher this last week was trying his hardest to bring the Light of God into this seemingly un-penetrable darkness, and he was severely beaten. Even as he was being attacked, he kept telling them that Jesus paid the price for their sin and has a purpose for their life. We can only hope someone took his words of Life and Light to heart.

Dear friends, Jesus is our guiding Light, and he’s given us His Word to Light our way Home. We really need it now! “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a Light unto my path.” There’s also the Light of prophecy. These golden lanterns of Truth are given to help us see and understand our time clearly. How precious it is that we have been given the Word of God, rich in prophecy! They fill our hearts with Hope that He will never leave us or forsake us in this darkened time, and His prophecies clearly show us that we are close to our destination... “When you see these things begin to happen (violence, darkness, lawlessness), lift up your heads for your redemption draws nigh.” - (Luke 21:28)

Not long now, dear ones, and darkness will be no more.
