The Watchmen Are Shouting

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Since the beginning of time God has been faithful to send prophets or watchmen to warn the people of coming danger. This is a serious job for the most trustworthy, reliable, and sober-minded people. Not many would qualify for this job. In fact, God makes it clear...

“But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6)

Have you noticed the huge amount of online preachers sounding the alarm lately? It’s unprecedented. The watchmen are not staying silent, exactly as God has requested... "I have set watchman upon your walls which shall never hold their peace day or night; you that are messengers of the Lord, keep not silent!” (Isaiah 62:6)

The watchman’s job is first and foremost to sound the alarm against danger; to warn the people with time enough for them to get to safety, and then to listen attentively to what God has for them to say next.

But not all of the watchman’s job is shouting warnings, he is also told to shout to the Saints to prepare to meet their God. This is a shout of victory! A Home going! A Reunion of all reunions!  “For there shall be a day when the watchman on the mount shall cry, Arise! Let us go up to Zion unto the Lord our God” (Jeremiah 31:6).  What a joy that will be!

Dear friends, we can hear the watchman shouting. May the noise of this world’s infighting be drowned out by the call of the faithful watchman, for their cries should fill us with joyful anticipation. The Lord is near...

But we must keep listening...
