The Watching King

Tomorrow’s Coronation of King Charles III is a religious ceremony, formalizing his rise to head of the Church of England. Every bit of symbolism is intended to put the world on notice that he reigns under the authority of Jesus Christ, King of kings and Lord of lords.

While much of this has become mere “pomp and circumstance” to people (and the monarchy) today, God is watching all earthly leaders and He holds them accountable for their rule. Psalm 82 puts them on notice… “God stands in the congregation of the mighty (rulers). He judges among the gods (those ruling as if there is no accountability). ‘How long will judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Consider this! Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.’”

But, to this higher accountability in Jesus, “The King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God,” most rebel… “They (choose) not to know, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations (of justice) of the earth are out of course. ‘I have said: You are all gods, for all of you are children of the Most High (created in God’s image), but you shall die like men and fall like one of the (wicked) princes.’” – (Psalm 82)

These words of Christ are not spoken lightly, for He instructs every Church to pray… “For kings, and for all that are in authority” that they might rule to honor God. Our responsibility to pray is no less greater than theirs to reign in righteousness – a sobering reality.

Psalm 82 closes with this prayer, that we also pray today… “Arise, O God, judge the earth, for You shall inherit all nations.” The Watching King is returning soon, and every knee will bow, and every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is LORD. May tomorrow’s ceremony just whet our hearts for that moment.

Maranatha.
