Slanderous words are like arrows which go straight to the heart because slander attacks a person’s character. To go from national hero to national traitor, because of lies, was such an event for David. Yet in his grief, he penned these words to his enemy… “Why do you boast yourself in mischief, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures continually. Your tongue devises mischief, like a sharp razor…” – (Psalm 52:1.2)
Doeg claimed to love God, but his pretense was exposed by his mouth, for as Jesus said: “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” James 1:27 says: “If any one among you seems to be religious, and bridles not their tongue, they deceive their own heart: this one’s religion is in vain.” Only God can transform the human heart to tame the tongue.
Slander is everywhere today. Politicians are crafting their words to purposely slander good people to bring them under the net of the new One World Order. Common kindness and common courtesy are no longer common at all. Many Christians, out of the Word, have cutting, belittling words for everyone they get annoyed with. It’s wrong.
The whole point of the Cross was so that we could be transformed “into the image of Christ.” His Spirit dwells within us… not coming and going, but dwelling permanently, continuously, to bring His goodness into our hearts and homes. Titus wrote of the difference… “Speak evil of no one, do not be brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness to all people. For we ourselves also were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But after the kindness (lit: goodness) and love of God our Savior toward mankind appeared… He saved us!”
Like the Roman soldiers who guarded the tomb of Jesus, David asked the Lord to stand guard on everything that came out of his mouth… “Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips” – (Psalm 141:3). What a great prayer! Here’s another… “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in Thy sight, O LORD, my Strength and my Redeemer” – (Psalm 19:14)
"The fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth" - and the tongue reveals it.
