The Subtle Trojan Horse

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

This world is sprinting towards the cliff of eternity, but not in fear for how short their time is, but oblivious to it all. Their minds have been deceived into believing that today is the only thing that matters.

“Guard your heart with all diligence for out of it flow the issues of life.” (Proverbs 3:23).  “Set your mind on things that are Above, not on things that are on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2). But a Trojan Horse has found its way into millions of hearts and minds. They are being destroyed from within. They’ve become convinced that their image, their popularity, and their style is their entire purpose for living. Eternity isn’t even being considered…

“In the end people will be lovers of self rather than lovers of God.” The selfie generation has fed the inner narcissist, causing many to worship themselves. A beautiful, young Ukrainian woman was weeping, face in hands. The reporter asked her if she’s lost loved ones in the war. She responded that she’s lost her internet capabilities and her 150,000 followers. Through sobs she said she “didn’t want to go on without her followers.” What about her family? Her siblings? She loved self more. “Jesus said, ‘If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.” (Matthew 16:24)

We have a great conflict presented to each of us. We can either deny ourselves and follow God, or love ourselves in place of God. No diluted mixture of the two will work. One will lead to life and the other to death. We must not be fooled by the lie that we can live entirely consumed with self and still please God.
