The Sign Of Jonah

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Jesus has been preaching and healing throughout Israel, all in order that people would recognize that He is God, “For only God can do the things You do.” But, the news of the feeding of the 5,000 spread fast and people wanted free food. They heard of the healing of the blind, the leper, and the paralytic, and they wanted healing, too. They wanted the blessing over the Blesser and demandingly called out, “Show us another sign!”

Jesus responded, “An evil and adulterous generation seek for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Matthew 12:38-40)

The greatest sign ever given to us by God is that His love for us would cause Him to leave the glories of Heaven, clothed in human flesh, and would take upon Himself our punishment for our sins and bear them in His own body on the cross. People fail to grasp that a physical healing is temporary… they will still get old and die. As exciting as the miraculous feeding of the masses was, they would soon hunger again. It’s temporary. But the sign of Jonah, is a picture of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. This is an eternal work, a permanent position of us with Christ, and no other miracle compares!

It has been stated, that if you get a blessing from God, your life here on earth will be helped, but if you find Christ Himself, and all He brings, a thousand problems will be solved all at once, from here into eternity.

“A greater One than Jonah is here.” (Matthew 12:41)
