The Safety Net

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Over the years we’ve all been told to make sure we have a will - make sure we have a disaster plan - make sure we have enough insurance - make sure we have enough food - enough education - enough money - safe cars – etc, etc, etc... we even have safety nets that aren’t so literal - a family member, or friend, that we know would take us in if we ever needed help, or the place we know we could survive if war or disaster broke out... Yet, when we read the Bible, we see that God places the greatest emphasis on our safety net being... Him. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these(other) things will be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)

In contrast, there was a rich man who had no use for God, or eternal things. He’d had a bountiful harvest, so much so, that he said to himself, “I will tear down my old barns and build bigger ones to store my goods, then I will relax and take time to myself - I will eat, drink and be merry.” The Lord responded to him - “You fool! Tonight your soul will be required of you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?” (Luke 12:18-20). His problem wasn’t being successful - but being negligent about his eternal affairs. So many are...

Dear friends, we all feel a sense of vulnerability in life right now, but the answer isn’t in anything of our own doing, but in drawing close to the One “who makes all things work together for good.” We can rest in His promise that if we put Him first, He will help us get every other need taken care of. But He must be our ultimate Safety Net.

There’s no one else so capable.
