The Safest Place

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

In the days of Noah, “God saw that the wickedness of mankind was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of their heart was only evil continually… the earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence” (Genesis 6:5,11).  Yet in midst of this picture of decay and danger, “Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord, and Noah walked with God.” The safest place to be in this life is in the will of the Lord.

While king Saul sent out his thugs to hunt the future king David, Saul had cast off the will of the Lord, while David “was a man after God’s own heart,” who sought and walked in the will of God. Though Saul pursued, God protected. David wrote, “Under the shadow of Your wings will I take refuge, until these calamities be over and past” (Psalm 57:1).

Jesus walked this world in perfect righteousness, yet He was hated by those whose hearts were evil. They tried to push Him off a cliff in their rage against His teachings, “but He, walked through the midst of them, went His way.” Again they sought to arrest Him at a holiday feast, “but no one laid hands on Him because His hour was not yet come.” Again and again they tried, but while they plotted their evil, we have Jesus’ prayer recorded for us… “I delight to Your will, O Father, Your law is within My heart.”

What a powerful truth this is for us… “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me. You will stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand shall save me. The Lord will perfect that which concerns me…” (Psalm 138:7).

What a comfort for these days!
