In the days of the Tabernacle and Temple, there was one sacrifice that was continual. Every morning and every night without fail, a lamb was sacrificed, anointed with fine flour, and pure oil, along with a drink offering of wine (Exodus 29:38-44). It spoke of the daily love of God through Christ, the Lamb of God, continually supplied to us every morning and every evening. It was called the Sweet Savour (Aroma) Offering.
The perfect once-for-all sacrifice of Christ, of which all those others spoke, has eclipsed those shadow offerings… “Now, once for all, in the end of the age has He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself” (Hebrews 9:26). Therefore… “Walk in love, as Christ also has loved us, and given Himself for us as an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour” (Ephesians 5:2).
Because we are made a kingdom of priests, we too have loving service to fulfill… “It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High: to show forth your lovingkindness in the morning, and your faithfulness every night” (Psalm 92:1,2).
God calls this ministry ‘The sacrifice of praise’ because it costs… “Whoever offers (lit: sacrifices) praise glorifies Me: and to the one who orders his lifestyle aright, I will show the salvation of God” (Psalm 50:23). But it also declares victory over our enemies… “Why do you boast yourself in mischief, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures continually!” (Psalm 51:18).
May our conduct and words rise above all that is wrong in this world… “Because of Him, let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name” (Hebrews 13:15).
