The Bible gives us a beautiful example of elderly Believers when Jesus was born. First, there was Zacharias and Elizabeth, “who were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord, blameless… and they both were now well stricken in years” (Luke 1:5-7).
Then there was Simeon, who was also “right with God and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit, that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah” (Luke 2:25).
Also at the Temple was a godly widow… “And there was one Anna, a prophetess… she was of great age… who departed not from the Temple but served God with fastings and prayers night and day” (Luke 2:36-38).
What a ministry and testimony these godly older people had. They had believed the promise of Messiah… “They shall never be ashamed who wait for Me” (Isaiah 49:23). How thankful we should be of these faithful saints who did not waiver in patient faith, who abounded in hope, and continued to serve Him, through difficult times.
Suddenly, one quiet night, their waiting hearts were rewarded. Their eyes saw Him and their arms embraced Him – and so shall we. What a glorious anticipation! Like these godly elderly people of the Scriptures, may we be found serving the Lord with joy when He returns…
“You turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from Heaven, whom He raised from the dead: Jesus, who delivered us (by the Cross) from the wrath to come” (1 Thessalonians 1:10).
“Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when He comes shall find watching," because the Reward is Him.
