The Rapture

There are many false ideas about the Rapture. Some say we’ll just disappear, and no one will see or know where we went. Some say the Rapture takes place mid-Tribulation or even at the end, which defeats its whole purpose, and denies the clear promise of God. Some say, Jesus will stay hidden in the clouds, or just call us upwards. But the Bible gives us crystal clear instruction on what will happen.

There are four Greek words used to describe the Rapture. Each one of them has a distinct truth. The first is the word “apokalypsis.” We get the English words “apocalypse” and “revelation” from this word. It means “to reveal that which has been kept hidden from view,” Like pulling the cover off a new car on the showcase floor. The Churches are... “waiting for the coming (apokalypsis) of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 1:7). The word “apocalypse” is associated with unprecedented wrath and global disasters because it is after Jesus is revealed at the Rapture, and has rescued those who love Him, that the judgments He has promised will fall upon this evil world.

The second Greek word is “parousia” meaning “the personal presence” of the one waited for. “Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming (parousia) of the Lord. Behold, the Gardener is waiting for the precious fruit of the earth and has long patience for it… be patient also, establish your hearts: for the coming (parousia) of the Lord is drawing near” - (James 5:7,8). Jesus is not sending anyone else in His place to come and get us, nor will His appearing be a holy hologram from Heaven. It will be Himself, leading the way with Heaven’s throng behind Him.

The third Greek word is “phaneroo” which means, “fully revealed to the eye” … “And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He shall appear (phaneroo), we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at His coming (parousia)” - (1 John 2:28). Jesus won’t be hidden behind cloud cover, “every eye will see Him.” (Revelation 1:7).

The last Greek word is “epiphaneia” from where we get the English word “epiphany,” meaning, “brightness; appearing with light.” We are, “Looking for that blessed hope and glorious appearing (epiphaneia) of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ” – (Titus 2:13).

So, putting it all together: at the Rapture, the mystery is over, no questions are left concerning who Jesus is. His personal presence will be fully revealed to every eye, in the glorious brightness that surrounds Him. And we shall be “caught up” (Greek: “harpazo” = Latin: raptured) to meet the Lord in the air – and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

Wherefore, comfort one another with these words. Maranatha.
