The Most High God

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

Nebuchadnezzar walked in his palace and said proudly to himself, “Is not this great Babylon built by the might of my power, and for the honor of my majesty?” In his arrogance, he rejected the truth from Daniel that “The God of Heaven has given you a kingdom, power, strength, and glory.” God humbled Nebuchadnezzar, by giving him a beast’s heart for seven years, until he acknowledged… “The Most High God rules in the kingdom of men” (Daniel 4:17).

God hates pride because its root is rebellion. It is the chief sin of Satan whom God calls “the most proud.” It is the basest of idolatries, rejecting the knowledge of God to glorify self.  Our generation is filled with this sin.

But it is marvelous to realize that although our God is “The Most High God,” He is not proud. He is meek and lowly. “Meek” means He is not easily provoked by wrongs done to Him. Although He is All-powerful, He looks beyond the wrongs done to Him, to act in gentle grace for the need of the sinner. How amazingly great He is!

Jesus is also “lowly” – He doesn’t act in arrogant superiority over anyone, He treats everyone equally. By His Cross, He humbled Himself unto death, to invite us upward to share His throne of glory, to make us co-heirs with Him. How amazingly great He is! No wonder He alone so rightly deserves the title “Most High God!”

It is just as true today that “The Most High God rules in the kingdoms of men, and sets up over it the basest of men (Daniel 4:17). Yet, His power is not hindered, nor His purposes thwarted. He still invites our generation to humble themselves and receive His gift of pardon and eternal life. For He is returning soon to gather His own to safety - while abasing the proud in the seven-year tribulation.

Truly, He is “God Most High.” Maranatha.
