The Missing Chair

Inside the Temple at Jerusalem were beautiful pieces of furniture, all covered in purest gold. A huge Menorah on the left gave light within the first room of the Sanctuary so the priests could see. On the right was a beautiful golden table, crested with gold lace, with 12 fresh loaves of bread put upon it each week. In front of the curtain, leading into the Most Holy Place, was a golden altar for burning incense. Then, inside the beautiful thick tapestry curtain, was the Ark of the Covenant, covered with cherubim, where God promised to meet with the High Priests who would enter once a year.

There were no chairs in the Temple because the priests’ work was never done. He could never sit, relax, and say, “It is finished.” But when Jesus came to earth and fulfilled all the types and shadows of the Law concerning the work of salvation, Jesus cried “It is finished!” from the Cross. Then we read these wonderful words… “When He had by Himself purged us from our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:2).

Jesus’ work was so perfect, it was done “once-for-all.” So when the Bible tells us… “If you then are risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God,” we are being told by the Holy Spirit to focus on Christ’s finished work and the certainties that will flow from it.

The Gospel invites people to eternal rest in Christ, while stating this fact: “although the works were finished from the foundation of the world” (Hebrews 4:3). Because Jesus is seated on His Throne, we can set our hearts on “what shall be” while walking through “what is.”

That’s Faith.
