This beautiful hymn was written by Frederick Lehman, in the late 1800’s, and is still sung all over the world today.
“The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell. It goes beyond the highest star and reaches to the lowest hell. The wandering child, is reconciled, by God’s beloved Son. The aching soul again made whole, a priceless pardon won. The love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall forevermore endure, the saints’ and angels’ song.”
But it is the third verse that was added a bit later that fills our hearts with praise. These poignant words were found etched on the wall of a prison cell…
“Could we with ink, the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made. Were every stalk on earth a quill, and everyone a scribe by trade. To write the love of God above would drain the oceans dry; nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.”
This Lord’s Day, may the love that God has for you be what defines you, sustains you and restores you. Like the disciple John, who referred to himself as the “One the Lord loves,” we too, are loved just the same. “You are precious in My sight… and I have loved thee” (Isaiah 43:4). What a treasure to be loved by Him!
