The Last Hour

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

It has been almost 2000 years since Jesus died, arose, ascended, and promised to return. Truthfully, we have been in the ‘last days’ since He walked this earth, for the Bible says… “God, who at various times and in different ways spoke in times past to the forefathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son."

Since these are the 'last days,' the Bible urges us... "Therefore, we ought to give the more earnest attention to the things we have heard, lest at any time we let them slip by” (Hebrews 1:1,2;2:1).

We’ve all heard the stories of those traveling on cruise ships, who docked at certain ports to shop and sightsee, and who got so caught up in their present enjoyment they neglected to notice the time and the blasts of the cruise ship’s horn. Too late they ran to the docks only to see the ship gliding out to sea. This is the picture the Lord gives us of those ‘neglecting’ to answer the call of salvation.

Not only are we in the last days, but we’re also in the last hours… “Little children, it is the last hour: and as you have heard that antichrist shall come, even now there are many antichrists, by which we know it is the last hour” (1 John 2:18).

And even last hours become last seconds, for the return of Christ happens, “suddenly… as a snare it shall come upon the whole earth… as lightning.” The people of God will receive glorified bodies for our transfer to Heaven “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye.”

Last days, last hours, last seconds. Jesus urged readiness many times, so it’s not fearmongering, but wisdom, concern, love, and joyful anticipation, that compels Christians to warn people to be ready for Christ’s return. Like Noah, keep inviting, keep warning, keep sharing Christ, the only Passport to Heaven.
