Aged Simeon was promised by God that he would not die until he had seen the One who would save the world. When that moment came, he held Jesus in his arms and said to Mary… “Behold, this Child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (Yea, a sword shall pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” – (Luke 2:34,35).
Simeon knew from the Scriptures that Jesus would be pierced and die… “I am poured out like water. All My bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax… the wicked have enclosed Me: they pierced My hands and My feet” (Psalm 22:14-16). Years later, Mary, who held the Gift of Life in her arms as an infant, watched Him suffer and die by the anguish of crucifixion.
But there is far more to the story. Jesus endured that terrible Cross to heal us… “Who bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live for righteousness: by whose stripes you were healed (cured)”– (1 Peter 2:24). Jesus took our sin on Himself and paid the price of death for the laws of God we broke.
To all who confess their sins and welcome Christ as Lord, He grants His Spirit of righteousness, bringing new life, new desires, and new power. His Spirit of Life not only "heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds," but He guarantees, “I will ransom them from the power of the grave. I will redeem them from death.”
There is only one Cure for this world’s evil. What people do with Jesus determines whether they will eternally rise or fall. His promise, to all who come to Him in faith, still stands… “I am the God who heals you.”
