The Gift Of Life

Why was the Virgin Birth necessary? Jesus needed a perfect body, untainted by the sin-nature of humanity, in which to live – and die. When king David wrote, “I was shaped in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:5), he wasn’t claiming his mother was a wicked woman. He was acknowledging that a sin nature is passed down from parents to children, who will continue to pass it on to their children.

The Bible explains it this way… “As by one man sin entered the world, and death because of sin; and so death passed upon all humanity, because all have sinned” (Romans 5:12). For Jesus to die as a sacrifice for mankind, He needed a sin-free body to indwell… “Wherefore, when He came into the world, He said, ‘(Animal) sacrifice and offering You did not want, but a body You have prepared for Me.’” (Hebrews 10:5).

When Mary asked Gabriel how a virgin-birth could come about, he answered, “You shall conceive in your womb (surrogate)… the Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also, that holy thing (body) which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:31,35). Holy dignity, privacy, and glory shrouded the creation of a holy body for the eternal Son of God.

Only a sinless Substitute could take our sins upon Himself and rise again. Jesus, in birth, life, and death, was “holy, harmless, undefiled, and separate from sinners.” Because of His perfections, it was not possible that death could hold Him (Acts 2:24). Having paid for our sins in His own precious blood, He arose in power, to keep all those who trust in Him, for eternity.

There’s no greater Gift of love.
