The Deep Well

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Years ago, a neighbor of ours had a well dug. He said he knew there was water there so he didn’t care how far they had to go to find it. They found it at 1000 feet, a gusher! But the water sample showed arsenic was present. All his effort and money came to nothing.

Such are the minds and hearts of modern philosophy, without God. “A person’s thoughts are like water in a deep well, but someone with insight can draw them out” (Proverbs 20:5). But there’s a problem when someone “Is always learning but never coming to a knowledge of the Truth” (2 Timothy 3:7). Their deep wells of knowledge are polluted; without any life-giving Truth, and the frightening part is that their water is “drawn out” and shared with classrooms full of hungry minds, eager to learn.

Everyone is thirsty for knowledge, but there is only One source that is safe and satisfying for all of our needs. God gave a warning through Jeremiah the prophet, “My people have committed two sins: they have forsaken Me, the spring of Living Water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water” (Jeremiah 2:13).

May we purpose to pass everything we are told through the filter of God’s word. If it “seems” right, but not completely right, it’s meant to confuse us and lead us astray. These are deceptive days, and the “author of confusion and the father of lies” is busy deceiving many. May God help us to be discerning as we refuse to receive every piece of information fed to us by the “experts,” rather, let us draw water from HIS deep wells of knowledge. Only in Him will we find Living Water that satisfies our every need.

Draw deep!
