The Curse

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

There is more than one “curse” mentioned in the Bible, the first being the destruction brought on by chosen sin. “I will greatly increase your pain in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” (Genesis 3:16).

This curse wasn’t just towards women, but men… “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and dust you will return. (Genesis 3:17-19)

The curse of sin has fallen on us all - no one is exempt! The amazing power of the Gospel is that it stops this curse in its tracks and replaces our fallen nature with a “bought and delivered” nature - Children of the Most High! We are no longer subject to the dread of the curse, but are brought into a New Life in Christ where rivers of Living Water flow through us. It’s the miracle of miracles! That Christ would redeem the cursed for His bride!

But there is another curse… With regards to Israel, God’s chosen people, He states, “I will bless those that bless you, and CURSE those that CURSE you, and in you and in your seed shall all the generations of the earth be blessed.” (Genesis 12:3)

What does this word, “Curse,” mean? It’s two different words… the first one (mekalelcha) means to “make light of something heavy.” The second word for “Curse,” (aor), means to “utterly destroy.” These are serious words that demand respect. If we look upon what is happening to Israel and “make light of it,” the Lord holds the authority to “utterly destroy” the one that is apathetic to their plight.

The sobering reality is that we’re watching the world side with Palestine, and give their nods of approval to the murder of whole families in their own homes and beds. Can you imagine the world-wide uproar if Israel did this?! In essence, we have a whole world that now resembles the heart of Hitler. This is prophetical… “On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And ALL the nations of the earth will gather against it.” (Zechariah 12:3) We’re watching it in real time!

This is a dangerous combination… the nations rising against Israel (while she is under severe duress), and the curse of God upon those nations. No one needs to wonder who gets the final say. God’s perfect will shall be done. This is NOT an empty promise…

Jumping ahead to the final war of all wars… “Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath upon the earth.” (Revelation 16:1). These “bowls” represent a sudden and rapid judgement, (unlike vials that pour out more slowly). God’s wrath comes! The festering sores upon those that took the mark of the beast; the sea turned to blood, killing every living thing in it.

The rivers and springs became blood (take note this judgement is specifically for killing His chosen people). Then the sun was allowed to scorch people with its fire. The world was plunged into darkness, and yet they refused to repent of their wicked hearts. The Euphrates River dried up, making way for the army from the East to march into Megiddo. Then three demonic spirits leave the mouths of the “false trinity,” the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet. They perform signs and go out to all the kings of the earth (to fire them up for battle).

The warning of the Lord follows… “Behold! I come like a thief in the night! Keep your garments (the armor of the Lord) on, and stay awake!” (Revelation 16)

The Lord is near and His judgment comes with Him. Honor Him! And “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. They shall prosper that love thee.” (Psalm 122:6)
