The Challenged Throne

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Nothing brings out evil in a leader quite like challenging his throne or dominion. When we realize that much of today’s warfare and chaos isn’t just rivaling political parties, but it’s a battle to maintain the grip of their evil dominion. Once fallen from heaven, Satan’s dominion has been this world, and he will fight with all his power to maintain his hold on his domain.

“How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations. You said in your heart I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned in the Mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” (Isaiah 14:12-14)

This is a problem as Jesus stated very clearly that, “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” (Psalm 24:1). The evil presence of Satan on earth is visible everywhere, as well as the goodness and beauty of God is visible everywhere. We have a choice to make. Charles Spurgeon, penned it well when he stated, “How precious your soul must be when both God and the Devil are after it!”

Satan is vying for our allegiance, but not to him, but to ourselves. He has never asked people to worship him, because he knows that if he can get us to do what we want and make ourselves our own god, then he has succeeded in getting us to not follow God. God, on the other hand, owns everything, but gives us free will to choose Him in return. He does not hunger for ownership, He has it! He longs for relationship, not forced or manipulated, as Satan does, but open and honest trust, and sacrificial, substitutionary love displayed on the cross. The war around us isn’t with flesh and blood as much as it is about power, dominion, and who holds the throne of our hearts. This is the real war that rages everyday, and we must “Choose THIS day whom we will serve.” The throne of our hearts has ONE seat-for Christ, or for self. Don’t be fooled into thinking God is content to be your passenger. He isn’t. Make Him Lord over your whole life.
