The Breath Of Life

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

“Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7).

What a combination! The humble, lifeless dust and the living breath of the Creator of every living thing. Life itself is a gift from God, not of ourselves, but imparted in love, that we may live to reflect Him and love Him in return. But a recent survey shows that many believers claim to be “running on empty, drained, numb inside,” and have “nothing left to give.” How is it that life that was gifted to us is now leaving us empty?

The answer lies in Scripture. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for EVERY good work” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Are we spending time in the Word of God each day? We need to be, as it is receiving the breath of God into our lives, filling us with purpose, joy, love, and a heart ready to serve. Without it, we are trying to do it in our own power. No wonder people feel drained.

“He is the vine, we are the branches,” which means we stay connected to The Source of Life and drink of His sustenance. We were never meant to try to make it on our own. The popular song, “I did it my way,” may sound romantic and adventurous, but the truth is that it leads to a dead-end road of hopelessness.

May time in His Word restore and rejuvenate you.
