During WW1, a Christian soldier cried to the Lord in his private prayer time early one morning. “Lord, I will likely die soon and I have no fellow Believers to share with. I feel so alone. Please, Lord, hear my prayer.” Just two days later, out in a field full of fox holes, their army advanced, but night was closing in fast.
As the soldier settled into his foxhole for the night the words of an old hymn filled his heart. He started singing it softly, and the words comforted his soul. But then, he heard another voice join in, and another! Within a few minutes, three Christian soldiers had joined together in one fox hole fellowshipping over the things of God. It’s strange how fellowship changed everything - the night didn’t seem as cold, the food they shared seemed to hold more flavor, and fear seemed further away. God had heard and answered his lonely prayer. Fellowship grows more and more dear as the night grows darker and the evil more pervasive… “Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” - (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
Dear ones, are you feeling beaten down? Weary? Anxious? Struggling to feel hopeful? We must strive to see our situation from Heaven’s perspective… “Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory He will reveal to us later.” Soon these trials will be forever over, and the eternal blessings of God will be our new reality. But for now, may we be about the business of encouragement, edifying, and strengthening each other until our night turns into Day. And may the fox hole we find ourselves in be turned into sweet places of fellowship.
We need each other.
