The Advocate

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Each one of us is an advocate for another. The parent is the child’s defender, mediator and spokesperson. In the marriages where one is a Believer and one is not, the Believing spouse advocates for the other before the Throne of God each day. By doing this the unbelieving spouse is “Sanctified (set apart) unto the Lord” (1 Corinthians 7:14). Little did they know that they have been placed in a position of blessing by being included daily in someone’s prayers! By living with one that lives in the love and strength of God, they have a front row seat to watch answered prayers, and to hear the Gospel from one that loves them, and they get to witness the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, (in a world that has none). What a blessing for them!

It’s a sobering thought to realize that there are those in our lives that if we don’t pray for them, no one will. If we don’t share the Gospel with them, who will? It should light a fire under us as we see evil relentlessly pursuing each soul that is not covered by the blood of Christ. We MUST advocate for them. The question arises, “If I’m advocating for my unsaved friends and family, who’s advocating for me and my needs?” God is so good and loving, that He sent His Son to be not only our Savior, but our Advocate. He hears the groanings of our hearts and turns them into prayers before our Father (Romans 8:26). When our strength is spent, He gives us strength (Isaiah 40:29). And when our life’s efforts seem to burn to the ground, “He gives beauty for ashes” (Isaiah 61:3).

And, “If anyone sins, we have an Advocate who pleads our case before the Father, He is Jesus Christ, the One who is truly righteous” (1 John 2:12). What a precious thought that Christ Himself advocates for us before His Father and that He is intricately involved in the goings on of our lives. We are not alone. He is for us. And as He strengthens us, we, then, in turn can advocate for others. This is true love in action.
