Today is Memorial Day, the date set aside to remember every soldier that gave their life serving their country. Although many attempts are being made to erase their loving sacrifice, we remember, and God remembers... “Greater love has no one than this but to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). This selfless sacrifice is modeled after Christ Himself.
Both Jesus and the soldier live with a greater and higher purpose - a loyalty to their Commander, and an obedience to follow through whatever is asked of them. There’s a precious spirit of servitude seen in North America, as the soldiers are volunteers, offering their very lives, of their own free will, for the protection and preservation of freedom for their fellow man. How like Christ! He stated, “No man takes My life from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have the authority to lay it down, and the authority to take it up again” (John 10:18). Love is only true love when it is given from a willing heart.
May our hearts overflow with gratitude and praise for all that’s been gifted to us, here and into eternity. We are blessed! May we strive to live lives worthy of these freedoms and sacrifice. None of it was free.
