“Your words were found and did eat them; and Your word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of my heart: for I am called by Your name, O LORD God of Armies.” – (Jeremiah 15:16)
Jeremiah wrote these words, not in a time of peace and prosperity, but in a time of war and distress. The verse before it says, “O Lord, You know (what I’m going through): remember me and visit me, and avenge me of my persecutors.” The verse after it says, “My pain is perpetual, and my wound incurable (without You).”
The same is true for us. When all around us seems bitter, we have a daily Source of sweetness in the Words of our God. When “joy seems withered away” we have a Fountain that will “rejoice our hearts.” When we feel small and insignificant, we are reminded Whose we are and that His power and love will defend us.
When we feel corruption will never end, we hear His Voice showing us things to come… “Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations He has made in the earth - He makes wars to cease to the ends of the earth; He breaks the bow, cuts the spear in two, and burns the chariots in the fire. Be still and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:8-10).
How desperately we need our daily Manna from God’s Word, just like the Israelites of old. Manna was a picture of Christ, the True Bread from Heaven, and it tasted like “wafers made with honey” (Exodus 16:31). They gathered a “certain amount” (lit: word) every morning, and found strength, joy, and satisfaction for the journey Home.
And so shall we. Enjoy!
