Strong Shoulders

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

When Jesus entered our human realm as a Babe in Bethlehem, only a small amount of people knew about His arrival. They didn’t know that wrapped up in a tiny Baby was a burden bearer. His shoulders would be so strong and capable that “the whole of the world’s governments would rest upon His shoulder.” (Isaiah 9:6)

As a grown man, He spoke directly to the heavy burdens that weary our souls…  “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

It is a humbling thing to be honest about our own human frailty. We were never made to carry the evil of the world on our own shoulders, or in our minds. Our eyes were never meant to see all the violence and bloodshed that is filling the earth. If we feel that the intense weight of it is crushing us, we must give it to the Lord. How do we do that in a way that eases our burdens? We pray, and we “Cast our burdens upon the Lord and He will sustain us. He will never permit the righteous to be moved.” (Psalm 55:22)

As Israel continues to fight for their right to exist, and the death count continues to rise, we must remember that “He who keeps Israel, never sleeps nor slumbers.” And that “Whoever touches Israel, touches the apple of God’s eye.” He has a message for Israel…

“Listen to Me, you descendants of Jacob, all the remnant of the people of Israel, you who I have upheld since your birth, and have carried since you were born. Even to your old age and gray hairs, I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” (Isaiah 46:3, 4)

What a blessing to know that God Almighty wants to shoulder our burdens. He carries us, and promises to sustain and rescue us. Israel is not alone; Strong, loving Shoulders are holding them up. Praise God!
