Stand By Night

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

“Behold, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, which stand by night in the House of the Lord. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and bless the Lord.” (Psalm 134:1,2)

It’s important to know that the Temple had no chairs because the work of the priests was never done. So it’s a powerful testimony to the finished work of Christ, that when Jesus had… “by Himself purged us from our sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on High” (Hebrews 1:3). His work of salvation was perfectly finished.

It’s also beautiful to learn that there was an appointed group of singers and musicians, who stood and praised the Lord every morning and every night. Think of how many nights when the people of God faced enemies outside, when fears came with the darkness, that inside the Temple, a group of faithful priests were singing His praises, blessing His name, and upholding the nation in prayer before God.

The lesson for us is that even though the work of salvation is finished, and Christ is seated on His Throne, our work of intercession is not done. We are to pray for the furtherance of the Gospel, for kings and all that are in authority; for the persecuted; for the peace of Jerusalem; and for one another. And we are to be a thankful people, praising the Lord for His faithfulness, truth, and love “at all times.”

The Church is the “Stronghold” against which the world and the devil will not prevail. To stand and sing in our “night seasons” is a sign of victorious faith.  For our night will turn to Day at a sudden Trumpet blast. May our prayers and praises never cease.

This is our time to stand by night.
