Dear friends, we all know what it’s like to have a fatigue of soul. It’s not resolved with extra sleep, more exercise, and better nutrition. It’s deeper than that. It needs the deepest, most secret worries of our hearts to be spoken to by the only One who can truly help - our Great Physician.
Elijah was weary of soul! But in 1 Kings 18, he was bold and brave, full of courage and great deeds as “the hand of the Lord was upon him.” But in the very next chapter, he’s filled with fear, running for his life, anxious, and so depressed he wants to die. As he settled to sleep under a broom tree, he was awoken by an angel that said, “Arise and eat.” A hot cake was cooked over the fire with a jar of water beside it, and he ate and was refreshed. He thought he was alone in his trial, but he wasn’t. God was caring for his weary soul.
Once again, God sent him to rest by a brook in Jordan to be refreshed. “He sent the ravens to bring him meat and bread every morning and evening. And he drank from the brook.” God will still do this today. He gets us alone, often in nature, and feeds us precious truths from His Word. He knows exactly how to breathe new life into our tired souls.
Oh, how we all can relate to the mountains and valleys of Elijah. So often spiritual highs are followed by crippling spiritual lows. But dear ones, it’s in this low time that God wants to open our eyes to deeper truths we’ve never seen before. May we have ears ready to hear what He’s saying.
Friends, may we recognize that as evil grows, so does our need for our soul to hear from God. Everything depends on it - our peace, our joy, our perspective, our strength, and our testimony. Get alone with Him, even if your busy, and let Him feed you and care for your soul. He knows how.
