So Much To Be Thankful For

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

A young man sat at a small dinner table and looked across at his new wife over their first supper together. “I am so blessed!” he exclaimed. He had a good job, a vehicle, a loving church family, and had just married the love of his life. “Yet in all this goodness, we have something greater still,” he said with a smile. And he took her hand, bowed his head, and prayed, “Lord, thank You, that our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”

Years later, a slightly-greying, middle-aged man sat at a dinner table, looking across at his wife and family. Many moves, health issues, wayward churches, difficult teen challenges, and loved ones taken Home, had taken their toll. But that day he learned his life-long job was terminated. As he gazed around the table into the faces he loved so dearly, he smiled tenderly at his wife and said, “We have so much to be thankful for.” Grasping her hand, he prayed, “Lord, thank You, that our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”

Another thirty years later, an elderly time-worn man sat at a small kitchen table with his wife. Each of them now had health issues, their children and grandchildren lived far away, and his righteous soul was vexed daily with world news.  On the table was a small salad, two pieces of chicken, and a Bible waiting to be read after supper. He took his wife’s hand, and with a twinkle in his eye and his constant warm smile, said, “Honey, thank you. We are so blessed. We have so much to be thankful for.” Then bowing his head, he said, “Lord, thank You, that our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”
