Sharing His Comforts

“Praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of ALL comfort, who comforts us in ALL our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in ANY trouble, by the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” – 2 Corinthians 1:3,4

The word “comfort” means: ‘One called alongside to help.’ It is the beautiful picture of the Best Help you can imagine, coming and putting His arm around you, and telling you He’ll walk with you through this time of pain, heal your wounded heart, give you wisdom and counsel along the way, and bring you safely through.

God has promised eternal “Comfort” for life’s injustices and heartaches in Christ. He is not just the “Consolation” of Israel, but of the world. Before His death and resurrection, He encouraged His disciples… “I will ask the Father, and He shall send you Another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever” (John 14:6).

There are two Greek words for “Another.” One means, “another which is identical,” and the other means, “another of a different sort.” The word for the Holy Spirit is the word which means “identical.” And here we see the work of the Trinity (Godhead) in our lives.

That God sees our sorrows, feels our griefs, and longs to carry our pain, is the testimony of the Cross. He did it to heal us… “Surely, He has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows… He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement that bought our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed” – (Isaiah 53:4,5).

The Bible reveals the hopelessness of those without Christ… “I considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun, and beheld the tears of those who were oppressed, and they had no Comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no Comforter” (Ecclesiastes 4:1). What a sweet ministry is ours to come alongside the hurting, put our arms around their shoulders, and say…

“Let me tell you what Jesus has done for my soul.”
