Safe & Sure

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

If we could go back to the first Passover and put ourselves in the shoes of the people of Israel that night, we would have stood together as a congregation while a spotless lamb was slain. After witnessing nine massive plagues against Egypt already, tonight would be the biggest and the last – the angel of death.

Yet God had promised… “You shall take the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, in which you shall eat it… and the blood shall be to you for a sign upon the houses where you are: and when I see the blood, I will PASS-OVER you… and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you” (Exodus 12:7,13,23).

Think of the urgency and anticipation with which we would have applied the blood to the doorposts. And as we gathered inside for the night, would we have doubted God’s promises? No – the blood made us safe, and God’s Word made us sure.

Today we have the same guarantee… “By two immutable things, in which is impossible for God to lie, we have strong consolation who have fled for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before us” (Hebrews 6:18). The New Covenant in Christ’s blood, received by a prayer of faith, makes us safe from “the wrath to come” upon this world, and the Word of God, who can’t lie, makes us sure…

“Therefore, being now justified by faith, we are saved from wrath through Him” (Romans 5:9) … and again, “For God has not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation (deliverance) by our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:9).

What great confidence has been given to us in Jesus Christ! We can endure these days of injustice and deception knowing our Deliverer is coming. Hallelujah.
