Return, O Lord

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Psalm 90 is written by Moses, and is actually a heartfelt prayer that resonates deep within our own hearts all these years later.

Moses, first of all, reminds us that no “place” is home, but God, Himself, is our dwelling place. It is the Cleft in which our souls find rest, no matter where we are or what our circumstances are, and He is the Everlasting arms that never let us go.

“Lord, You have been our dwelling place (our Home) in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or before You created the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God.”

Next, he remembers the brevity of man… “Mankind is like grass, renewed and flourishing in the morning, but in the evening it fades and withers…the years of our life are 70 or 80, yet their span is filled with toil and trouble; they are soon gone and we fly away. So teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Lastly, his prayer becomes a plea, “Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on Your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with Your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all of our days. Let Your work be shown to Your servants, and Your glorious power to their children. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us.”

May our hearts find comfort and rest in the knowledge that He is aware of our frail, brief lives, but that in Him, as our Home and our Purpose, there is joy! Moses asks the Lord, “How long, Lord, until You come?” Jesus answered that for us in the book of John 14:3, “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.”

Even so, come Lord Jesus.
