Remembering & Forgetting

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Life is a funny thing. We go through such difficult, hurtful times, that we try to blot it out of our minds, never to have to relive it again. But then we go through the most precious experiences that give us glimpses of Heaven’s joy...The problem with us, is that we tend to remember, in too much detail, the hurtful times, but we struggle to recall the times of blessing and joy.

Israel also struggled in the “remembering and forgetting” dance. The Lord had words of wisdom for them, encouraging them to remember the great things He had done for them (so should we)...

“Remember the One who parted the sea, making a path through the mighty waters, who drew out the chariots, horses, and their whole army, who now lay in waste, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick: Forget the former things, do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland” (Isaiah 43:16-19).

It’s so important that we remember all that God has brought us to and through, or we will soon find ourselves questioning if He is guiding our present and our future. The heart is a fickle guide, don’t trust your emotions to tell you truth. He is the One who delivered us then and will make a way for us in this very moment, and into the future.

Are we excited to see the “new thing” He is doing? Are we living expectantly or defeated? Friends, God is a God of details. He’s working in the specific matters of our hearts, as well as the grand workings of nations and governments. He’s doing a new thing that He wants us to be a part of. May we seek His will and join in His great doings. Only that which is eternal will last. Let’s join Him!

I can hardly wait to see Him “make a way in the wilderness and streams through the wasteland.” Keep watching, dear ones! He’s doing a new thing!
