Redemption Draws Near

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

In the days of the prophet Elisha, the king of Syria besieged the city of Samaria until the famine was desperate. The people were distressed, death seemed certain, and there was no way out.  Yet the Lord told Elisha to tell the people, “Tomorrow, about this time, a measure of fine flour shall be sold for shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel.”  It seemed too good to be true! One ruler sarcastically remarked, “If the Lord would make windows in heaven, might this word come to pass?”  But it did. What seemed so impossible to men was not impossible with God.

The Bible is filled with examples of God intervening when everyone thought there was no hope.  But the only kind of faith worth having – the kind of faith God EXPECTS us to have - is faith that believes with God anything is possible. Since it is impossible for God to lie, He expects us to believe everything He says. Since it was impossible for death to hold Him, He expects us to believe His power toward us.  Without faith, it is impossible to please Him, and He’ll honor even a “mustard seed” size of it.

Jesus is the Great Intervener. When the enemy does “great things” He says, “Fear not, for the Lord will do great things!” It is when, “On earth there is distress of nations with no way out, and people’s hearts fail them for fear of what’s coming” that we have the promise of Christ’s return.  The beautiful hymn, ‘How Firm A Foundation’ says… “The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes. That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.”

Maranatha.
