Quiet Time Treasures

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Just recently a big city developer, from our area, bought a place out in the hillsides of Montana. The reason? He said life has become too noisy. “Everyone has such strong opinions that they feel should be heard. The political environment has made society hateful and crude. The internet has given anonymity to every bitter, foul-mouthed user. Where decency towards our fellow man used to be the norm, now hate and intolerance is commonplace. It’s heart breaking! I don’t want to raise my family in this toxic environment.”

I couldn’t help but wonder if he had room for us on his new ranch? Wouldn’t it be so nice to just shut off the evil that grieves us so! But take heart, dear ones, Jesus, Himself, gave us a beautiful example of how to find peace and quiet amidst the incessant noise - He got away and got with His Father.

“But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness and prayed” (Luke 5:16) … “After He had dismissed the crowds, He went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray” (Matthew 14:23). It’s not so much a matter of where to go, but to get alone with God. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and learned sweet treasures that were eternal - so can we. “But one thing is needed (time with God), and Mary has chosen the good part, which shall never be taken from her” (Luke 10:42).

Once we’ve spent time hearing from Him, our whole outlook holds Light that wasn’t there before. There’s Hope where there was only discouragement. There’s Strength where there was fear. There’s Joy where there was sadness. Isn’t it amazing how time with God redirects everything?! What a Treasure!
