Pressing On

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

What are you pressing ahead for? Much of our world believes that the best they can hope for is a world free of warfare, a pay raise at work, better self discipline, or a better living situation. We all press on for something… but God calls us to press ahead primarily for what is eternal. Anything else is secondary.

C. S. Lewis, wrote about these silent longings of our hearts… “I must keep alive in myself the desire for my True Country, which I shall not find till after death; I must never let it get snowed under or turned aside. I must make it the main object of life to press on to that Other Country and to help others to do the same.”

The Apostle Paul captured this sentiment also…  “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal, to win the prize for which God has called me Heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13, 14

Oh, how we all need to keep this mind frame front and center in our lives! The tyranny of the urgent makes the temporary demands feel more important than the eternal, but nothing is further from the truth.

Think of Abraham and all that God had blessed him with - to be led to a land given by God; to be a father of a nation, and a man of great wealth, but none of this compared to what he knew was to come…  “Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, whose architect and builder is God.” Hebrews 11:10

Press on, dear ones! This life is fleeting and eternity is near. What a joy to know that we have an eternal address, safe in Heaven with our Lord. Nothing and no one can take that from us. May we set this thought before us each day as the Great Light that guides us Home.
