Jesus said, “These things have I spoken to you, that in Me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer (comfort and courage); I have overcome (conquered) the world.” – (John 16:33).
What does it really mean for us that Jesus has “overcome the world?” A missionary family with little children travelled down a large river, only to realize a huge log jam lay before them. The logs threatened to crush and capsize the boat, but a tugboat saw their desperate need and came to their rescue. Pulling up alongside the riverboat, the captain welcomed the family inside, then, securing their boat behind the tug, led them safely through otherwise deadly waters.
Being “in Christ,” means we are safely inside the only One who has ever conquered every danger, demon, and death, this world can throw at us. And not only are we “in Him,” but He indwells us by His Spirit, sealing us for eternity. This double-security ensures that a Believer can never be overcome by any evil power… “You belong to God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.” – (1 John 4:4).
The Spirit of God within us also infuses us with the very power and character of Christ, helping us “overcome” difficult situations in His strength… “In the day when I cried, You answered me, and strengthened (overcame) me, with strength in my soul” – (Psalm 138:3).
As individual Believers, “overcoming” is God’s promise to us in Christ… “I write to you, young adults, because the Word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the Wicked One… For whoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith. Who is the one who overcomes the world, but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” – (1 John 5:4,5).
The Bible tells us: “Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen you heart, all you who hope in the Lord” – (Psalm 31:24). The Lamb who makes us “overcomers” is also the Lion of Judah who is about to roar.
