Our Strength

“In the day when I cried, You answered me, and strengthened (infused) me with strength in my soul.” – (Psalm 138:3)

If our physical body needs strength, so too does our soul. We know how to strengthen our bodies through weight-bearing exercises, but how do we “strengthen our souls?” The Lord gives us three ways – prayer, His Word, and doing His will.

Jesus told Peter, “Watch and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matt. 26:41). When Moses spent time talking with God, he left with his face glowing, not merely reflecting God’s light and power, but infused with it. So shall we.

The second is knowing God’s Word… “Counsel is Mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding, I have strength.” (Proverbs 8:14). True wisdom is a strength this world does not possess. They have no Standard for wisdom but make up what “goes with the flow” of each changing generation. The Bible says if the leaders of this world had any wisdom, “they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory.” Every child of God who knows their Bible is… “wiser than our enemies… has more understanding than all secular teachers… has more understanding than all the ancient people” of the earth. To possess Truth is to have strength.

And the third is simply putting into action what He asks us to do… “The way of the Lord is strength to the upright” (Proverbs 10:29). In the discipline of “godliness”, we’re strengthening ourselves for the glorious future God has in store… “Exercise yourself toward godliness. For bodily exercise profits for a little while, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that is now, and of that which is to come” (1 Timothy 4:7,8).

One of the names for our Lord is “Strength” and His promise to those who love Him is this: “As thy day, so shall thy strength be.”
