It’s important to know definitions in our Bible. The definition for the word “hope” is not the same in the Bible as the way we use it today. Today, hope is defined as, “to want something to happen or be true” (Merriam Webster). It is a “maybe” or a “wish,” riddled with holes of uncertainty. But that is not the case with the Biblical word “hope.”
Biblical hope is defined as, “A confident and delightful expectation of coming good, in the midst of hopeless circumstances, because of the immutable promises of God.” Notice the three elements of our hope in this next verse - “Hold fast the CONFIDENCE and the REJOICING of this hope firm TO THE END.” – (Hebrews 3:6)
The promises of God regarding our future in Christ, have no uncertainties attached to them, no matter how distressingly hopeless life’s circumstances seem to be… “We desire that each one of you show forth the same eagerness regarding the full assurance of hope until the end… for God, willing to show the heirs of His promises the immutability of His counsel, confirmed (His promises) with an oath: that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us. Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which has entered into that (Land) within the veil (Heaven)” - (Hebrews 6:11-19).
While the world is entering the stormy waters that will bring about the Great Tribulation, and while the nations are in distress and unable to find any way out, our Hope has a name – JESUS. We look for that blessed hope of His glorious appearing to save this world, judge the corruption, and bring in His reign of everlasting righteousness. It’s not a maybe, but a glorious, joyful, certainty.
